Myanmar: Mandalay
Mandalay, situated about 600 kilometers north of Yangon on the Ayeyarwaddy river, is
with about half a Million inhabitants Myanmar´s second largest city. Mandalay was the capital
of the last, independent Burmese kingdom, which in 1886 was finally conquered by the
British colonial forces.
Mandalay is famous for the handicrafts and jewels and although for it´s temples
and monks. About 50.000 monks are living here. Despite it´s size, Mandalay is a
very quiet city and cars are not very common. Most of the traffic consists of motorbikes
and bicycles.
Around Manday the landscape is a dream. Mountains, rivers, water-falls and four
'deserted cities' are the great sights around the city. So the visitor can spend
a very good time in Mandalay. It was one of my favourite destinations in Burma.
