Myanmar - the golden land
"This is Burma and it is quite unlike any land you know about."
-- Rudyard Kippling
"This is Fascist Disneyland"
-- Aung San Suu Kyi
Myanmar? Where the hell is it? That were the kind of questions that friends asked me,
when I told them, that I will go to Myanmar. It is a very unknown country in Germany and
I think in a lot of other countries too. Myanmar is one of the largest countries in South East Asia, stretching over
2,000 km from North to South. It is twice the size of Vietnam, over a quarter larger than Thailand, and
Myanmar is bigger than England and France combined.
Myanmar is easy to reach, if you take the short flight from Bangkok, and it
has some unbelieveable sights and incredibly friendly people.
On the other hand, the brutal Military Government has cut the contact with the
late 20th century for a long time, and so it is one of the least Western-influenced
countries in the whole world. Many people mistake this for quaintness, but don't let
this blind you to the political realities that created this situation.
