Myanmar: Yangon

Yangon - the capital city of Myanmar has about 4 million citizens and is the embarking place for nearly every tourist. Daily flights from Bangkok and other Asian cities arrive here. Yangon is a charming city, with wide streets and a lingering air of tropical and colonial decay. It is a city, which has the atmosphere of a small country town - huge trees spot the downtown. The traffic is slow and in the evening children are playing at the streets.

Although there are several points of interest in the city, the towering Shwedagon Pagoda literally stands above them all. Situated at the top of a hill that overlooks all of Yangon, this glittering temple is undoubtedly one of the most awe-inspiring structures in all of Asia. Its 100-meter spire is sheathed in 13000 gold plates and crowned with more than five thousand diamonds and other precious stones. The Shwedagon Pagoda is the holiest of Buddhist sites in Myanmar.
